Health classes explained
How the four tiers of ratings work, what they stand for, and what factors move people between them.
Carriers organize term coverage by rating tier. Naming differs a little across companies, but the framework is consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, then Standard, plus table adjustments for higher-risk cases. Tobacco users get a separate rating track at higher rates.
What underwriters look at
Weight and height, blood pressure and cholesterol readings, cancer or heart disease before age 60 in the family, driving history, medicine history, line of work and leisure pursuits, and smoking or nicotine consumption. Being top-rated requires excellent results across the board; Preferred permits a slight hiccup or two; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed conditions such as treated high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
In the health part of quotes, you describe your condition honestly: Excellent lines up with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quoted pricing aligns with that rating; the carrier validates it after underwriting. Uncertain? Quote multiple ratings and review them before applying. Overstating your health doesn't reduce the final premium—just the precision of the quote.
Susman Insurance Agency supports you in finding carriers whose rules are more lenient for your situation, which frequently matters more than just looking at the base rate.
