Cerritos transformed from a dairy farming community incorporated in 1956 to one of California's fastest-growing suburban cities.
When Cerritos incorporated on April 24, 1956, it did so under the name "City of Dairy Valley," a title that accurately reflected its landscape: more than 400 dairies, 100,000 cows, and 106,300 chickens occupied the incorporated area, vastly outnumbering the 3,439 residents. Cow pastures gave way to subdivisions during the 1960s as the region urbanized, and the city officially adopted the name Cerritos—Spanish for "little hills"—on January 10, 1967, signaling its shift from agricultural to suburban identity.
The city's transformation accelerated through the 1970s and 1980s with the arrival of major infrastructure including the 91 Freeway and the residential and commercial developments that followed. Cerritos gained recognition as one of the fastest-growing communities in California, adding not only the Towne Center and its retail ecosystem but also the Cerritos Auto Square, one of the region's largest automotive retail centers. Today the city celebrates its founding each April with a festival commemorating its incorporation anniversary, featuring entertainment, dining, games, and fireworks.
